The bull has always impressed people as a symbol of strength and fertility. Its imposing form turned it into an object of worship as the Mediterranean peoples considered it divine.
It is an animal domesticated since the Neolithic era, but it remained in a semi-wild state and its hunting has always been regarded as an act of physical superiority and domination over the forces of nature.
In Greek mythology, Zeus takes the form of a white bull to seduce Europe, something he finally manages to do in Crete after many adventures. The descendants of Zeus and Europe establish the dynasty of the kings of Crete, whose descendant is Minos. As evidenced by important archaeological finds of utensils, sculptures, and jewelry with representations of the figure of the bull, its worship in the heyday of the Minoan culture was considerably strong.
